About the Chettinad style

Chettinad interior design and architecture represent a magnificent fusion of traditional Tamil heritage and global colonial influences, originating from the prosperous Chettiar community of Tamil Nadu. This style is defined by its grand scale and opulent use of materials, including Burmese teak, Italian marble, and Belgian glass, blended seamlessly with local elements like vibrant, handmade Athangudi tiles. At the heart of a Chettinad home is the central courtyard, designed to facilitate natural ventilation and provide a gathering space for the family, often surrounded by intricately hand-carved pillars of wood or stone. The architecture is deeply responsive to the hot, semi-arid climate, utilizing thick walls finished with a unique mirror-like lime plaster and high-pitched terracotta roofs that facilitate rainwater harvesting. Entrances are typically marked by grand, richly carved wooden doors and elevated verandas known as thinnais, which served as social hubs. Decorative stucco work featuring mythological and floral motifs often adorns the walls and ceilings, while the overall grid-like layout emphasizes symmetry and functionality. Today, Chettinad design is celebrated for its timeless elegance, offering a sophisticated, old-world charm that highlights craftsmanship and sustainable building practices.
